Thiago Silva has confirmed he is leaving Paris Saint-Germain
Thiago Silva has confirmed he is leaving Paris Saint-Germain with Chelsea reportedly set to sign the Brazil international on a free transfer.
The 35-year-old will leave the French capital having played his last game in Sunday’s Champions League Final – a 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich in Lisbon.
Silva has won 23 trophies in his eight years at the club but says he now needs a fresh challenge to help maintain his place in the national team set up.
He told RMC Sport following Sunday’s defeat: “It was my last match as a PSG player.
“I’m sad and I’ll be back with another role in future but I’ve to change. I want to play for another three or four years more and be part of Brazil team in Qatar World Cup.”
Chelsea are reportedly closing in on the signing of experienced centre-back Thiago Silva.
The 35-year-old captained Paris Saint-Germain into Sunday night’s Champions League final with Bayern Munich, which was decided by a Kingsley Coman goal in the second period.
Silva has now become a free agent, though, and various reports in recent days have claimed that he is a target for Frank Lampard’s side ahead of the 2020-21 campaign.
According to Sky Sports News, the Blues are now closing in on the signing of the Brazilian, who is set to pen a contract with the Premier League club until June 2021.
Silva has spent the last eight years with PSG, making over 300 appearances in all competitions, winning seven Ligue 1 titles in the process during a hugely successful spell.
Fiorentina have also been strongly linked with his services in recent days.
Thiago Silva denies Fiorentina deal
He told Sky Sport Italia: “I’ve not accepted any bid. Reports of agreement reached with Fiorentina are not true.
In an interview with Sky Sport Italia, Silva denied he has agreed to join Fiorentina and says his agent has been speaking to “other clubs” as well.
“I’ve not accepted any bid. Reports of agreement reached with Fiorentina are not true,” he added.
“My agent is talking with Fiorentina as with other clubs. I’ll decide on next days with my family”.
Is the veteran heading to Stamford Bridge?.
Chelsea chance of signing Thiago Silva
Thiago Silva has played his last game for Paris Saint-Germain and is now reportedly set to join Chelsea.
The Brazilian experienced disappointment in his final game for the French giants, falling to a 1-0 defeat in the Champions League final to Bayern Munich.
Fabrizio Romano now claims Chelsea are confident of signing Silva on a two-year deal with the Blues expecting to receive his final answer next week. They are said to be ‘convinced’ he will agree to join Frank Lampard’s side.
The Athletic meanwhile add that Silva’s move to Stamford Bridge is ‘almost done’.
